HAMPDEN’S MONUMENT UNVEILED

Book Cover: HAMPDEN'S MONUMENT UNVEILED

by Derek & Gill Lester.
The John Hampden Society - 2006.

A compilation of five reports of the events surrounding the unveiling of the Hampden Monument at Chalgrove on 19 June 1843. The greater part of the book is dedicated to copying verbatim the report in The Oxford Chronicle and Reading Gazette. This gives, word for word, the speech given by Lord Nugent and the reply of the Rev. Renn Dickson Hampden. The reporter also commented on some of the unseemly happenings concerning the hundreds of uninvited onlookers.
