Books about John Hampden
Anyone who wishes to know more about John Hampden will find the following books of interest. Some of them are now out of print and difficult to obtain, even from libraries.'MEMORIALS OF JOHN HAMPDEN, HIS PARTY AND HIS TIMES' by George Grenville, Lord Nugent. George Bell & Sons - 1831.
The first biography of Hampden, written by the man who erected the monument at Chalgrove, and who opened Hampden's coffin (or so he thought) to try to discover the truth about Hampden's death wound.
'JOHN HAMPDEN'S ENGLAND' by John Drinkwater.
Thornton Butterworth - 1933. Keystone Library - 1936.
As its title suggests, more a look at 17th century life as it affected Hampden than a biography. It contains the arguments put forward by both sides in the Ship Money trial in some detail.
'JOHN HAMPDEN - A LIFE' by Hugh Ross Williamson.
Hodder & Stoughton - 1933.
More of a narrative history of Hampden's life than the previous two, and much lighter going. The author is very critical of Nugent's work.
'WORLD-FAMOUS REBELS' by Charles Connell.
Odhams Books - 1970. (ISBN 600726533)
Contains an excellent 14-page section on John Hampden.
