How was John Hampden related to Oliver Cromwell?

Hampden and Cromwell were first cousins. John Hampden’s mother Elizabeth was the sister of Oliver Cromwell’s father, Robert Cromwell. When the Civil War began in 1642 Hampden was far better known as a public figure and a much more senior politician than his cousin Oliver.
