The catalogue is 62 pages long and contains 87 illustrations, most of which are in colour including the famous portrait of John Hampden by Robert Walker. It was produced to accompany the exhibition which ran at the County Museum in Aylesbury from 28th November 2004 until 27th February 2005.

The text includes not only well-researched captions accompanying the pictures but also a twelve-page essay by Society Vice-President Professor Ian Beckett and thumbnail biographies of the painters whose work is represented in the exhibition.

This gives, word for word, the speech given by Lord Nugent and the reply of the Rev. Renn Dickson Hampden. The reporter also commented on some of the unseemly happenings concerning the hundreds of uninvited onlookers.

Hampden Jewel (available from the Bodleian Library Shop)

jewel2The smaller jewel on the left is a replica of the Hampden Jewel, which is said to have been worn around his neck by John Hampden at the Battle of Chalgrove. The original (right), which is a cornelian in a silver setting, was given to the Bodleian Library by Thomas Knight in 1795, and has engraved around the edge the couplet, 'Against my King I do not fight, But for my King & Kingdom's right.'

The Bodleian Library has produced these replicas, which are on sale in the Library shop or via the website. To order, go to the Bodleian Library Shop. The replicas do not have the couplet engraved around the edge, but a copy is included in the presentation box.
